stories from the filipino readercon 2014 / day 3 of the 5th PILFBIS

This year, the 4th Filipino Reader Conference coincided with the last day of the 5th Philippine International Literary Festival and Book Industry Summit (PILFBIS). I was fortunate enough to get a leave from the day job to attend several panels. (And even facilitate one!)

I had to leave early though to avoid the afternoon payday rush hour, and unfortunately missed the Filipino Readers Choice Awards. But let me share with you some photos.

The concurrent events were held at Hall B of the Bayanihan Center, venue of the Komikon.

I arrived bright and early, even before the plenary speech by Camille dela Rosa of the National Book Development Board (NBDB).

I headed straight to Visprint to grab all the new books that I could and have them signed. Caught Tepai Pascual sitting at the Meganon booth.

I stayed put in Hall B to attend the panel “From Reader to Writer”, facilitated by Mina Esguerra. (List of panels here, for reference.) Delighted that the writers wanted to explore mystery/crime and sci-fi in their next writing projects.

PILFBIS 2014

Program break, so I sat down for anyone interested to have their books signed.

PILFBIS 2014

Next up: a panel on diverse reading facilitated by Dean Alfar.

Still in Hall B, the Visprint book launches. You should have heard Manix Abrera’s hilarious introductions. (On Mervin: “Nung nakita ko yung art niya parang ayoko na mag-drowing.” On Tepai: “Ang yabang e, parang gusto lang sabihin sa akin, ‘Mas magaling ako sa’yo.'”)

PILFBIS 2014

After lunch and more book signing duties, I headed to Conference Room F for the Authors as Readers panel, featuring Edgar Calabia Samar and Rin Chupeco, where they shared their favorite books and authors.

Loved the small room and the cozy atmosphere. I hoped I did an adequate job as facilitator! I thought the panel was fun, and I would have loved another hour with these writers and the audience.

PILFBIS 2014

I also attended the panel, “Non-required Reading: The Rise of the Book Clubs”, facilitated by Gabi Francisco, whom I have mistaken for her twin sister, Tata. (Tata was a classmate of mine in a Creative Writing class back in UP. Both of them are now teachers at Regina Maria Montessori.) I’m so sorry, Gabi!

PILFBIS 2014

My thanks as always to Ms. Nida and Visprint, Honey and the Readercon team, and Camille and Ciela of the NBDB. My deepest gratitude to the readers who bought our books and dropped by to say hi.

That was a Friday well spent.

#PLF2014

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the 2014 Philippine Literary Festival. Thank you to Visprint and the National Book Store for making this happen.

The venue was huge! This was in Ballroom 2 of Raffles Makati, with a seating capacity of 500.

Here are Budjette Tan, Karen Francisco, and Mervin Malonzo looking over the artworks the Visprint artists will be exhibiting.

The Ballroom fills up as people get ready for Manix Abrera’s launch of his second silent comics collection, 14.

Here we are serving as a sideshow for the ManixCon (term courtesy of Paolo Fabregas). Haha! (I say this with fondness.)

I joined a panel called “Emerging Writers Primer: Author as Businessperson”, with Karen, Mervin, Carlo Vergara, Mina V. Esguerra, and Nida Ramirez, with Siege Malvar as host. I enjoyed it! I hoped it was informative to the young writers in attendance.

I went to Ballroom 1 to listen to the Komikero panel. Very interesting discussion about the process of creating comics.

That’s Carljoe Javier, Adam David, Rob Cham, and Budjette.

A closer look at the amazing After Lambana art. We are aiming for a 2015 release. Watch out for it.

mibf ’14 + visprint book signing at precious pages

I’m happy to be back at the Manila International Book Fair this year!

It coincided with SM Mall of Asia’s three-day sale, so we decided to head there early — really early — and have breakfast before joining the crowd.

MIBF 2014

MIBF 2014

J had to head elsewhere first, so I walked to SMX from the restaurant. Good thing I chanced upon table-mate Ferdinand Pisigan Jarin (Anim na Sabado ng Beyblade, Visprint, 2013). We walked to the venue together.

Happy for the nameplate, but I still got asked where the registration table was. Haha!

MIBF 2014

I was happy to meet the readers. One of them, Mira, brought us some sweets!

Mira took this lovely photo of me and J at the Visprint table.

MIBF 2014

Tricia and her friend came armed with an Instax camera, which was very cool, and made me very jealous.

Ivy took a nice photo of me.

We stayed at the table until half-past 11.

Look at the crowd.

PROJECT 17 preview cover

I am happy to share with you all the wonderful (and completely surprising) news that my science fiction novel Project 17 is a finalist for the 33rd National Book Awards (Juan C. Laya Prize for Best Novel in a Foreign Language).

Congratulations to the other nominees, and thank you to Ms. Nida for sharing this with me!

You can see the full list here.

visprint launches dwellers + three more books

My heartfelt gratitude to Powerbooks, Ms. Nida Ramirez, Kyra Ballesteros, and the rest of Visprint; artist Aldy Aguirre for creating great art for my book, fellow authors Paolo Chikiamco, Karl De Mesa, and Dean Francis Alfar; fellow Alternative Alamat contributors, and the people who took the time to drop by the launch, listen, chat, buy books and have their copies of Dwellers signed. Thank you very much!

Dwellers is available now in all Metro Manila, Bulacan, Rizal and Cavite branches of National Book Store and Powerbooks Store, as well as Uno Morato in Quezon City.

For those outside Luzon, copies are also making their way to your book stores.

Photos! I wasn’t able to take a lot of photos, but I thoroughly enjoyed Paolo’s short talk about the rationale behind Alternative Alamat (How come we know more about Greek myths than our own myths?) and the contributors’ individual stories behind their stories, Dean’s advice to new writers (summary: the mechanism is all there, all you have to do is actually sit down and write!), and Karl’s showbiz tsismis. (Talagang yung tsismis yung nag-stand out sa akin ano.)

Can’t wait for Friday? Read an excerpt from Dwellers in the maiden issue of online magazine The Galvanizers. My thanks to Bea and Isa for inviting me to be a part of this.

Happy reading, and see you at the launch on July 25!

Note: Early announcements pegged the launch date on July 19 — Visprint had to move it because of the storm. Stay safe and dry!
