project 17, a novel – coming soon

So I’m coming out with a science fiction novel this year. I finished the manuscript late last year, continued editing until early this year, approved the cover, approved the interior illustrations, and now I’m just waiting for the page spreads. With the help of Visprint (publisher), Project 17 should be hitting the bookshelves soon. Watch out for it!

For now, feel free to share this post far and wide. Are you ready ready ready?

UPDATE: The book will be launched in this Saturday’s Aklatan! See you there.

Lillian is merely looking for a babysitting job for the summer, but a desperate man named Paul Dolores hires her to look after his 28-year-old brother, Caleb. Caleb is suffering from schizoaffective disorder, and Paul, who is about to start on his first office job in a long while, wants to make sure his brother takes his medication on time. Lillian, at first hesitant, accepts the job for the pay and the perks, but soon starts to wonder about the brothers she is working for. How come she can’t find any information online about the drugs Caleb is taking? And how come the national central database lists them as dead?

Apocalypses

There are readers who are looking for/waiting for Unseen Moon and Apocalypses in the bookstores. (I know because they told me.) Just to clarify: both books are published POD (Print on Demand). Meaning, if you don’t demand, we won’t print. No matter how long we wait in NBS or the other bookstores, the books sadly won’t appear out of thin air and settle on the bookshelves. Because you need to tell me first that you want a copy.

So demand away! Details here, or you may email me at victoriaeliza [at] gmail [dot] com to order a copy and to get the payment details. It’s going to be either through bank deposit or via PayPal. I don’t do meet-ups because I have a day job and a million things to do at home (like, wash clothes), but if I’m going to an event, and you’re going to the same event, then let’s do it.

For those who have already bought copies, thank you very much! Do leave a review in your website of choice (Goodreads, Amazon, your own blog, this blog); it helps in creating mileage for these titles, especially since they won’t be sitting inside bookstores.

Ah, yes; the wonderful world of self-publishing.

PS Both books are available as ebooks, if you want a copy now now now.

vote for your favorite books!

The Filipino Readers’ Choice Awards has closed its nomination window to make way for the public voting. Voting ends Sept. 6. My books are nominated; do consider voting if you enjoyed them.

Thanks!

bohol on a rainy weekend

I organized this trip and therefore stressed over this trip from the day I booked the flight in March until before the plane landed safely back in Manila on Monday. (But then, who am I kidding? I stress over everything. Just ask J.)

This is my third time in Bohol, my second with J, and my first time with my siblings. Now I only want to travel during the rainy season: less people, less expensive hotel rooms due to the off-peak season, no painful sun rays to ruin your skin, no time limit at the beach, and no need to take three showers a day just to feel like a human being! Downside (or upside?) is you’ll leave a home in Manila, submerged and alone to defend itself. Another downside is the possibility of getting your flight cancelled.

So I stressed over cancelled flights, planes overshooting the runway, and sudden thunderstorms, but things turned out well.

Flights were with Cebu Pacific. Before the flight, my brothers and I stayed at J’s place. Here we are at the airport. CebuPac now has a web check-in service. Hallelujah. It helps save time at the counters. Another help is the fact that the terminal fee is already incorporated into the plane tickets.

My resort of choice is once again Dumaluan Beach Resort. (They call it Dumaluan 2, “the one with the pool.”) They offer tours, but of course the packages are expensive. I poked around in the interwebs and found a highly recommended tour guide named Tatsky.

 Jesser “Tatsky” Cubero:

  • Globe – 0915-7945556
  • Sun – 0922-3671051
  • Smart – 0912-7472737
  • Email : jessercubero@gmail.com

I texted his Globe number (better to text – he’s usually out on the field most days) and was glad when he replied quickly. The tour fee is 2,300 for the five of us. Though he tours visitors himself, he handles 20 or so tour guides, so he referred us to Jojo for the Saturday tour. Kuya Jojo was on time at the airport, and very polite throughout the trip. Two thumbs’ up!

Recommended start time, by the way, is 8AM. We got to Bohol at nearly 10AM, so we just did the best we can with the day.

The last time J and I were here was in 2010. A lot has changed since then. Baclayon Church (third oldest church in the country, following the San Agustin Church and Paoay Church) looks brighter inside.

Tarsiers, which used to be housed nearly side by side in open huts, are now in their natural habitats. Entrance fee is now PhP 60 (as opposed to a PhP 20 peso donation three years ago), and you had to climb up steep steps to see the primates in the trees. Better for the tarsiers, though the local government should really consider just giving night tours so the tarsiers can sleep during the day.

The Loboc River Cruise is now PhP 450, but you know what, the cruise redeemed itself for me this year. Tatsky’s group recommends Riverwatch, and it is so worth it. The food was so good.

By the way, Loboc now has a waiting area for those going on the cruise. It’s airconditioned, with cable TV and computer terminals with free Internet connection.

The fee includes a buffet lunch and a ride down the river.

The Chocolate Hills has a new attraction: navigating the hills via ATV. I am not interested, but my siblings gave it a go.

While they’re enjoying the terrain, J and I had mango-flavored carabao milk!

Now off to the viewing deck for us:

Another attraction is traveling via zip line or cable car over the Loboc River. Nope. Nope. No can do. I’m sitting this one out. Fee is PhP 350 for zip line, 250 for cable car, and 350 for combo (zip line one way, cable car for return). I would have tried the cable car with J, but the counters were already closing when we got there, and a cable car ride takes 7 minutes.

My kind of adventure is sitting indoors with a book. You know how it is.

After buying pasalubong, Kuya Jojo drove us to Dumaluan, which is located on Panglao Island and shares the same white beach shoreline as the more expensive Bohol Beach Club.

I reserved an Executive Family room.

Executive Family – 4,500 Php Per Night – good for 4 persons
Fully air conditioned room, with solar powered water heater, refrigerator,
cable T.V. and breakfast for two persons.
Extra person is Php 400.00 per night inclusive of mattress and breakfast.

Okay. There was no water heater, so I don’t know what happened there. There is a refrigerator and cable TV though. And there’s a tree in the washroom!

P8241358

We liked the room. It’s homey.

Here’s the view of the room from outside.

storm cloud-related news

MANILA, Philippines—Severe Tropical Storm “Maring” blew out of the Philippines Wednesday morning, a day earlier than expected, leaving 16 people dead, five missing, and more than 1 million in misery.

Although Maring (international name: Trami) never hit land, it intensified the southwest monsoon (habagat), generating torrential rains that pounded Metro Manila, Central and northern Luzon and two other regions to the south of the main island for five days.

How’s that for a five-day storm-tossed house-arrest-like weekend for everybody? Our home in Bulacan has been flooded for a week now, as per usual, and our apartment floor leaked rainwater. Not our ceiling, our floor. I don’t get it either. I hope you are safe and dry and have enough food in your kitchen.

Silver lining: My short story collection, A Bottle of Storm Clouds, is included in the list of nominees for the 2013 Filipino Readers’ Choice Awards. Nomination is open until tomorrow!

UPDATE (8/23): Longer list of nominees now that the deadline is approaching. The Viewless Dark also nominated for Novel in English. Thank you!

nominations for the 2013 Filipino Readers’ Choice Awards now open

From Rappler, “Books populi: Filipino Readers’ Choice Awards”:

MANILA, Philippines – There’s a common notion in the literary community that if you haven’t won a Palanca/Free Press/National Book Award, you’re a nobody.

It’s a fiction that we writers and critics tell ourselves — outside of that small community of winners and entrants, these awards barely register. These awards have little to do with how the greater reading public consumes texts.

Despite award-giving bodies’ attempts to promote reading of the winning works (for example, when the Palanca Foundation uploads copies of winning works online), awareness of these awards and their impact is still confined to a very small literary community.

This is the context in which we find the Filipino Readers’ Choice Awards — one where accolades bear very little weight, and where there is a disconnect between who is reading in this country, and who is deciding what works deserve to win.

According to Honey de Peralta, one of the founders of the awards and an active member of Filipino Book Bloggers, the FRCA was borne out of a lament that award-winning titles were often inaccessible to mainstream readers due to their content and format, and that awards tended to create false distinctions such as “literary” and “genre” in the publishing industry.

The FRCA, then, hopes to act as the pulse of the reading public: what books are people reading, and what are they enjoying the most?
