Some quick updates and recos:

what do readers want invitationv3

My name (and my likeness?) is on the poster! Very cool. My book is also featured in this LED Billboard ad that will be flashing along Katipunan in a few days!

Click here to pre-register for the Filipino Readercon, happening at the Rizal Library in ADMU on Nov. 9 (Saturday). Choose what panel you’d like to attend. Most of the panels are happening simultaneously, so get ready to bilocate.

Bring/buy a copy of my book and I’ll hand you one of these cards. :) You can use it as a bookmark.

This set of cards from Moo UK has several designs, but this is my favorite.

Also got this in the mail recently. I couldn’t find The Shining Girls in the bookstores or on Amazon Kindle, so I ordered a paperback from the Book Depository. If you have not heard of Lauren Beukes, do check out her earlier novels, Zoo City and Moxyland.

I’m pretty sure you’ve heard of Aromateria‘s solid perfumes. Each scent, packaged in a  travel-friendly tube and priced at PhP 250, is named after a fictional character or author. My reader heart is happy.

Aromateria Solid Perfume Scents

I got Ender and Austen. Ender (stargazer lilies, sage, and white musk) is heady and earthy, while Austen (English tea rose, lavender, and patchouli) is fresh and bright, like a person who has just stepped out of the shower. Go to Aromateria’s site to order online, or find out what stores to visit to get a whiff of these babies. I seriously love them. (And I want more. Of course I do.)

Aromateria

We also found time to visit the Legaspi Sunday Market. Last time I had a roast turkey meal, and J grabbed himself some wagyu shawarma.

Legaspi Sunday Market

As well as this ginger ale. Yummeh.

J and I were just in Resorts World – Newport Mall, which held a weekend bazaar. Look at the cute earrings I found! I especially love the ampersand pair.

And my sister shared this with me – a review of my novel, Project 17, in UST’s student publication, The Flame. Thank you Alvin Laqui!

downloadI have recently re-watched The Shining and Vanilla Sky, and watched Rosemary’s Baby. Halloween! And the nights and early mornings are now colder. (And by “colder” I mean not-30 degrees Celsius.) I love this season.

pre-halloween sale: get a copy of ‘unseen moon’ for free on smashwords

The 3rd Filipino ReaderCon is just around the corner now – it will be held on Nov. 9 in Ateneo de Manila University’s Rizal Library.  I will be on the Authors as Readers panel, where authors talk about what they love to read.

Halloween, too, is just around the corner (as well as my birthday), and I love to read horror, so as a treat to fellow horror fans and readers, I’m making my book of dark fiction, Unseen Moon, available for free on Smashwords.

All you need to do is create a Smashwords account, and enter the coupon code prior to completing your checkout.

Unseen Moon
The fantastic cover is designed by Biboy Royong.

Ghosts in a mansion. A home invasion. A group of friends haunted by a murder. An unlikely friendship, a dead body in an abandoned house.

Unseen Moon (ebook edition) collects four suspenseful stories by award-winning author Eliza Victoria.

“If you want to get to know Eliza’s works but you’re not a huge fan of anything that is out of the normal world, then Unseen Moon might be the right Eliza book for you. If you’ve read Eliza’s other works and you want more, then you won’t want to miss this one.”

– Tina Matanguihan, book reviewer

“There’s always something about Victoria’s short stories that make my little brain cells applaud (or so I imagine): sometimes it’s the pure whimsy of her fantasy worlds; sometimes it’s the ingenuity of the plots and twists. For this anthology, it’s the audacity with which she writes about difficult issues like suicide, murder, and incest, as well as her ability to capture a person’s deepest hopes and fears and put them into words.”

– Meann Ortiz, GMA News Online

“… there’s no question that Eliza Victoria is a master.“

– Krysty Choi, book reviewer

“This most recent work of Eliza Victoria involves beautifully woven stories of horror, insanity, and juvenile crimes. I am not exactly a fan of dark and scary novels but I found myself enjoying Victoria’s book. It was wicked and creepy. Reading this book was a new experience for me because I’d never before come across a Filipino book that touches on the sensitive themes of juvenile crime, gender, and sex.”

– Tricia Gervacio, Mangojuiced.com

“Best read in old ancestral homes, or under the sheets with a flashlight.”

– Katha Magazine (Issue 01)

“While I was prepared to be scared out of my wits, thanks to the feedback from book club friends, I was still, well, scared out of my wits.”

– Marginalia

Please take note that 1) the coupon code expires on October 31st and 2) this sale applies to the ebook version only, which contains four stories.

The fifth story, a novella called The Viewless Dark (nominated for Best Novel in English for the Filipino Readers’ Choice Awards), is available as an ebook via Flipside Publishing through these markets:

Amazon.com (MOBI) | Flipreads.com (Adobe DRM/EPUB) | Barnes & Noble (Nook Book) | Kobo (Adobe DRM/EPUB) | iTunes (iOs) |ilovebooks.com (iOs/Adobe DRM/EPUB)

The paperback version, which contains all five stories, remains available from Books on Demand Philippines at PhP 450 per copy. Who knows, you might decide to get a tangible copy (which I will sign before shipping) if you enjoy the ebook. Email me if you want to order one.

Feel free to share this post. If you do decide to download the free copy, please leave a review on its Smashwords page, Goodreads, on your blog, or your social network of choice. That would be nice.

I have, of course, other titles available. Feel free to look around.

Happy scary reading.

mibf ’13 + readercon kick-off

The first Manila International Book Fair I was able to attend was in 2009, where I mistook Budjette Tan of Trese fame for a Visprint booth cashier. True story.

Then life happened, and I missed the Fair three years in a row.

I am happy to be back this year. In 2009, I have some published stories and poems under my belt, and bad eyesight. (Sorry, Budjette.) This year, I have a sci-fi novel and a short story collection published by Visprint.  I visited their table and saw my book there. How’s that for cyclical? How’s that for a happy ending?

Hoo yeah ang daming taoooo.

I got Allan Popa’s incredible collection of poems in English, Drone, from the Ateneo de Manila University Press boothand Paolo Fabregas’ The Filipino Heroes League from the Visprint table at the Precious Pages booth.

Later that afternoon we headed to Meeting Room No. 6 for the Readercon kick-off.

20130914_172749

Honey de Peralta talked a bit about the Filipino Readercon’s history.

The Viewless Dark and A Bottle of Storm Clouds didn’t have enough votes to make the shortlist, but thanks to those who voted for my titles! Here’s the shortlist.

I will be participating in the 2013 Readercon as a speaker in Authors as Readers. I will…talk about something. I need to get my Powerpoint presentation ready. See you in November! (Hopefully with my Powerpoint!)

Happy Saturday, with an equally happy Sunday, as I went on a road trip with J, his mom, his nephew, and their family friend. From Parañaque to Alabang to Makati and back to Parañaque. Awesome lunch at Uncle Cheffy.

storm cloud-related news

MANILA, Philippines—Severe Tropical Storm “Maring” blew out of the Philippines Wednesday morning, a day earlier than expected, leaving 16 people dead, five missing, and more than 1 million in misery.

Although Maring (international name: Trami) never hit land, it intensified the southwest monsoon (habagat), generating torrential rains that pounded Metro Manila, Central and northern Luzon and two other regions to the south of the main island for five days.

How’s that for a five-day storm-tossed house-arrest-like weekend for everybody? Our home in Bulacan has been flooded for a week now, as per usual, and our apartment floor leaked rainwater. Not our ceiling, our floor. I don’t get it either. I hope you are safe and dry and have enough food in your kitchen.

Silver lining: My short story collection, A Bottle of Storm Clouds, is included in the list of nominees for the 2013 Filipino Readers’ Choice Awards. Nomination is open until tomorrow!

UPDATE (8/23): Longer list of nominees now that the deadline is approaching. The Viewless Dark also nominated for Novel in English. Thank you!

nominations for the 2013 Filipino Readers’ Choice Awards now open

From Rappler, “Books populi: Filipino Readers’ Choice Awards”:

MANILA, Philippines – There’s a common notion in the literary community that if you haven’t won a Palanca/Free Press/National Book Award, you’re a nobody.

It’s a fiction that we writers and critics tell ourselves — outside of that small community of winners and entrants, these awards barely register. These awards have little to do with how the greater reading public consumes texts.

Despite award-giving bodies’ attempts to promote reading of the winning works (for example, when the Palanca Foundation uploads copies of winning works online), awareness of these awards and their impact is still confined to a very small literary community.

This is the context in which we find the Filipino Readers’ Choice Awards — one where accolades bear very little weight, and where there is a disconnect between who is reading in this country, and who is deciding what works deserve to win.

According to Honey de Peralta, one of the founders of the awards and an active member of Filipino Book Bloggers, the FRCA was borne out of a lament that award-winning titles were often inaccessible to mainstream readers due to their content and format, and that awards tended to create false distinctions such as “literary” and “genre” in the publishing industry.

The FRCA, then, hopes to act as the pulse of the reading public: what books are people reading, and what are they enjoying the most?
